ニューオーリンズ・セインツのクオーターバック（QB）ドリュー・ブリーズが現地4日（木）朝、国歌演奏中に膝をつく行為について触れた自身のコメントに『Instagram（インスタグラム）』で謝罪文を掲載した。
ブリーズは『Yahoo Finance（ヤフー・ファイナンス）』のインタビューの中で、2016年にコリン・キャパニックがしたような社会的不平等への注意喚起のために国歌演奏中に膝をつくような行為が再び起きるとしたら、“アメリカの国旗や自分たちの国に敬意を払わない人には、誰であれ決して賛成できない”と発言していた。
栄誉の殿堂入りを約束されたブリーズのこの発言は、キャメロン・ジョーダン、マイケル・トーマス、エマニュエル・サンダースやマルコム・ジェンキンスといったチームメイトたちをはじめ、NFLのリーダー的存在であるアーロン・ロジャース、ニューオーリンズ出身の俳優ウェンデル・ピアースといった人々からすぐに厳しい批判を浴びた。
4日になってブリーズは自身のコメントと、それが人々に与えた苦痛やいら立ちについて長い謝罪文をインスタグラムに投稿した。
以下が彼の声明だ。
「友人たち、チームメイトたち、ニューオーリンズの町、黒人の方々のコミュニティー、NFLコミュニティー、そして昨日のコメントで僕が傷つけた全ての人々に謝罪したい。何人かと話をして、自分が引き起こした痛みの重さを知り、打ちひしがれている」
「アメリカ国旗と国歌に対する敬意、団結と結束について話そうとする中で、僕は今この国が直面していることに鈍感で、完全に的外れなコメントをしてしまった。それは思いやりや共感、認識を欠いた発言だった。そしてその言葉は対立を生み、人を傷つけるものとなって、人々に僕が敵であるかのように誤解させてしまった。これほど真実からかけ離れたことはなく、僕の思いや性格を正しく映したものではない」
「僕の立場は次のようなものだ」
「僕は人種的不平等や警察の残虐行為と戦う黒人社会を支持しているし、改善のための政策実現に賛成だ」
「長い間、黒人社会の至る所で起こり、今も存在する弾圧を非難する」
「僕自身を含め、僕らはアメリカ人として、そうした平等のために十分に戦おうとせず、黒人社会の苦しみや窮境を真剣に理解しようとしなかった」
「僕は自分が解決のために役立てると認識していて、この運動の中で黒人社会のためのリーダーになれるはずだと思っている」
「黒人であることやアメリカで黒人の子どもを育てるのがどういうことなのかを僕が知ることはないだろうけど、これからは日々自分の立場に置き換えて考えるよう努力し、正義のために戦いたいと思う」
「僕は“ずっと”、あなた方の味方だった。敵になったことは一度もない」
「昨日の僕のコメントがあのように受け止められてしまって、とても苦しんでいる。でも、全ての責任と義務は自分で背負う。話すよりももっと耳を傾けることをしなくてはいけないね・・・そして黒人社会が自分たちの痛みについて語っている時はみんなで耳を傾けるべきなんだ」
「その点について、本当に申し訳なく思っている。どうか許してほしい」
I would like to apologize to my friends, teammates, the City of New Orleans, the black community, NFL community and anyone I hurt with my comments yesterday. In speaking with some of you, it breaks my heart to know the pain I have caused. In an attempt to talk about respect, unity, and solidarity centered around the American flag and the national anthem, I made comments that were insensitive and completely missed the mark on the issues we are facing right now as a country. They lacked awareness and any type of compassion or empathy. Instead, those words have become divisive and hurtful and have misled people into believing that somehow I am an enemy. This could not be further from the truth, and is not an accurate reflection of my heart or my character. This is where I stand: I stand with the black community in the fight against systemic racial injustice and police brutality and support the creation of real policy change that will make a difference. I condemn the years of oppression that have taken place throughout our black communities and still exists today. I acknowledge that we as Americans, including myself, have not done enough to fight for that equality or to truly understand the struggles and plight of the black community. I recognize that I am part of the solution and can be a leader for the black community in this movement. I will never know what it’s like to be a black man or raise black children in America but I will work every day to put myself in those shoes and fight for what is right. I have ALWAYS been an ally, never an enemy. I am sick about the way my comments were perceived yesterday, but I take full responsibility and accountability. I recognize that I should do less talking and more listening…and when the black community is talking about their pain, we all need to listen. For that, I am very sorry and I ask your forgiveness.
